If you sell on Amazon, watch out for a fake “Action Required” email that claims that you have a balance due on your seller account. The email claims that Amazon attempted to charge your credit card for the balance but your card was declined.
It suggests that you click a link to go to your seller account information and update your credit card details.
However, the email is a phishing scam and Amazon did not send it.
Link Opens Fake Amazon Login Page
If you click the link you will be taken to a fake Amazon web page and asked to log in with your email or mobile number and password. After entering your login credentials, you will be automatically redirected to the genuine Amazon website.
Meanwhile, criminals can use the stolen login credentials to hijack your Amazon account, steal your personal and financial information, and conduct fraudulent transactions in your name.
A Quite Sophisticated Attempt
This scam attempt is more sophisticated than others of its ilk. Unlike many scam messages, there are no glaring spelling and grammatical errors and the message is professionally presented.
Phishing messages often use very prominent links that demand that you urgently click on them. However, the phishing link in this scam email is blended into the text and thus appears less suspicious.
It is always safer to access your online accounts by entering the address into your browser’s address bar or via a trusted app.
The Amazon website includes information about identifying and reporting scam emails.
An example of the scam email:
Subject: Action Required – Pay your seller account balance
Greetings [Email Address Removed] from Amazon Services.
You have a balance due in your Amazon seller account. We attempted to charge your credit card for the balance, but your bank declined the charge.
For billing and security purposes, all Amazon sellers must provide valid credit card information from a credit card acceptable to Amazon. Please verify that the credit card information you have on file is correct, and contact your bank with questions related to the accuracy of the information you provided.
It is possible that the charge was declined due to a credit limit imposed by your bank. If that is the case, we will attempt to charge a lesser amount to your card as often as every 24 hours until the remaining balance in your seller account is paid in full.
If the card was declined for any other reason, you will need to update the credit card information in your seller account. Payment will be suspended until your credit card information has been updated. Go to Seller Account information to update your credit card.
Once your credit card information has been updated and verified, payment will be initiated on your next settlement date. Additionally, any fees owed for this settlement period will be charged to the credit card on your next settlement date.
As a reminder, for amounts you owe us, Amazon may charge any payment instrument you provide to us.
Thank you for selling on Amazon.
