A video entitled “Sharifa Alkhateeb Talks About Using Public Schools to Convert America to Islam” is currently being shared via social media.
It features Muslim writer and activist Sharifa Alkhateeb discussing long term plans to convert America to Islam.
The video, which can be viewed on C-Span, is generating heated debate as it travels with commentators linking it to the current divisive political climate in the United States.
Some have suggested that the video may be fake or has been dubbed. But it is genuine, and Sharifa Alkhateeb’s words have not been altered.
However, it is important to note that the video is not new. It is thirty years old.
Sharifa Alkhateeb was, at the time the video was made, the managing editor of the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences, which is published by the International Institute of Islamic Thought.
The video was recorded in August 1989 at the Muslim Americans Political Awareness Conference. Sharifa Alkhateeb is no longer around to offer any updated insights on her old speech. She died in 2004.
At least some of the political reports and circulating messages neglect to mention that the video they are discussing is thirty years old. Thus, people who see the messages may assume that the video is recent and conclude that it is directly relevant to the Trump era political landscape in the United States.
Of course, many will argue that the age of the video does not change its relevancy to current events.
Nevertheless, in the interests of accuracy, any messages that share or discuss the video should make sure viewers are aware of its age and history.
