Detailed Analysis:
A circulating report published via South African ‘news’ outlet Daily Post tells the harrowing tale of a self styled prophet who, thinking that he had God’s power backing him up, challenged a lion to do battle while visiting Kruger National Park. Supposedly, Zion Christian Church (ZCC) prophet Alec Ndiwane went charging towards a pride of lions after falling into a trance and speaking in tongues. The lions in turn ran towards Alec, who then decided to flee.
The report claims that a Kruger National Park ranger fired some shots to scare the lions away but not before one of the lions injured Prophet Ndiwane’s buttocks.
The story features a photograph supposedly depicting Prophet Ndiwane being attacked by the enraged lions.
But, the story so far remains totally unsubstantiated and may well be just a silly hoax.
When investigating the story, fact checking publication Africa Check contacted Kruger National Park for comment. A park spokesperson told Africa Check that there had been no reports of such an incident and called the story a hoax.
Moreover, a quick reverse image search reveals that the photograph featured in the report is taken from years old media articles about ‘lion whisperer’ Kevin Richardson. The reports feature a series of photographs – including the one above – depicting Richardson, a South African zoologist, interacting with his much loved lions.
So, the story should certainly be taken with a grain of salt.
