Delta Air Like-Farming Scam

Outline:
Facebook Page that appears to be associated with US carrier Delta Air Lines claims that you can win an all expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world for four people just by sharing a post from the Page, liking the Page, and adding the comment ‘Booked’.

Brief Analysis:
The Facebook Page is fraudulent and is in no way associated with Delta Air Lines.  There are no prizes and no winners. This is a typical like-farming scam designed to accumulate as many page likes as possible so that the fake Page can be used to launch other types of scam or sold on the black market to other scammers.

Example:
Celebrate with DeIta as we have officially been named the #1 Airline in the United States as of 2016! Share this post and Like our page Then Comment “Booked” to win 1 of 400 First Class ALL EXPENSES PAID Trips for 4 to anywhere in the world via DeIta Airlines, it’s just our way of saying thank you all! Good Luck! Ends on March 17 2016.Delta Air Like-Farming Scam

Detailed Analysis:
At first glance, many Facebook users may assume that this  ‘Delta Air’ Facebook Page is the official Delta Air Lines Page. A post on the Facebook Page claims that you can get a chance to win  an all expenses paid trip to anywhere in the world for four people. And, claims the post, all you need to do to win is share the post, like the Facebook Page, and add the comment ‘Booked’.

But, assumptions made during first glances are often incorrect. The Page is not associated with Delta Air Lines in any way and it is certainly not giving out all expenses paid trips to those who participate. In fact, it is a typical like-farming scam designed to harvest page likes from  unsuspecting Facebook users.

The genuine Delta Facebook Page, which is called ‘Delta’ not ‘Delta Air’ and features  Facebook’s blue ‘Verified’ icon, is warning users about the scam via comments such as the following:

… that is, unfortunately, an unauthorized promotion not sponsored by Delta Air Lines and a scam. Please know we have reported the page and it will be investigated.

By tricking people into sharing and commenting as well as liking the Page, the scammers ensure that their fake prize post spreads rapidly across the network and is seen by a great many potential victims.

So why would these scammers be so desperate to get your page likes? Well, a Facebook Page with a large number of likes can be a valuable commodity. It can be sold on a very active black-market to other scammers who will use it to achieve their own fraudulent goals. The more likes a Page has the more money it will likely command on the market. Alternatively, the now like-rich Page can be reused to perpetrate survey scams or other dodgy campaigns, this time to a much larger pool of potential victims.

Scams like this are very common on Facebook. The names of several major airlines around the world have been used in very similar like-farming scam attempts.  Be very wary  of any Facebook Page or post that claims that  you can win valuable prizes just by liking, sharing, and commenting.
