An increasingly common scammer tactic is to create fake Facebook Pages that claim to be associated with various high-profile celebrities.
The scammers publish what they claim is the official Facebook Page of the targeted celebrity. They will enhance the Page with images of the entertainer stolen from other sources. And, often, they will ‘salt’ the fake Page with several seemingly legitimate posts supposedly penned by the targeted celebrity
Next, they will begin posting messages claiming that the celebrity has decided to give away a large sum of money or an expensive prize such as a luxury car as a thank-you to one or more ‘lucky’ fans.
But, in fact, these fake Facebook Pages have no connection to the celebrities they name and they are certainly not giving away any money or prizes. Those who choose to participate have no chance whatsoever of receiving the promised money or prizes.
Instead, they may be tricked into divulging their personal and financial information on suspect websites.
Many current versions of the scam claim that users must click a link to download the celebrity’s latest movie to go in the draw for the promised prize. But, the dodgy video streaming site that the link opens insists that you provide your credit card details, ostensibly as a means of validating your account. Companies that use such deliberately deceptive tactics to promote their services certainly should not be trusted with your credit card details or any other personal information.
Other versions may insist that users visit scammy “survey” websites and supply their personal details in order to register for the supposed celebrity giveaways.
And these scams will also insist that users like, share, and comment as a prerequisite for entering the prize draws. The scammers are thus able to trick people into promoting their fraudulent material across Facebook thereby gaining many new Page likes and potential victims.
Be wary of any Page or post that claims to belong to a high-profile entertainer and offers you the chance to win large amounts of cash or expensive prizes just for liking and sharing or clicking links. While such celebrities may indeed be wealthy – and perhaps even generous – they are very unlikely to randomly hand over large amounts of cash or expensive prizes to strangers via a social media Page. Any such claims should be treated as highly suspect.
Note that the official Facebook Pages of most popular entertainers will feature Facebook’s blue ‘verified’ tick beside the Page name to prove its authenticity.
